Mac Cheat Sheet for Voice Over

Basic Commands

command description
cmd + f5 turn on/off Voice Over
cmd + fn + doubletap f5 turn on/off Voice Over (touchbar mac)
ctrl pause/unpause reading
ctrl + opt + a read from current position to the bottom of the page

Note: The VO (voice-over) command is set to “ctrl + opt” by default. You will see ctrl + opt both above and below in a number of commands below and will also see it referred to as the VO command in the apple documentation.

Browsing With Quick Nav On

“Quick Nav” (often referred to as Web Rotor) is a very important to Assistive Technology users. This allows users to scan and browse the page using different types of html elements. Often, if one html element is not working well, AT users will try a different a different HTML element.

Apple Voice Over Guide

← + → turn on/off quick nav
↑ + →
↑ + ←
toggle through types of elements

moves to the previous/next element of the selected type

browse to next/previous element (ignoring the selected type)

Note: If your function key (eg. f5) is doing something unexpected, you might need to hold down the “fn” key while pushing it. If you are having trouble, you might find this article helpful.

Windows 7 Cheat Sheet for NVDA

Note: ⚠ Unfortunately the built in Narrator for Windows 7 is not very good. I recommend installing the open source NVDA screen reader: https://www.nvaccess.org/download/
